We've come to accept that we must decontaminate ("treat" is the pleasantry for it) or filter our water before we can drink it — even in nature preserves. Imagine the outrage we'd feel were it necessary to decontaminate or filter the air we breath. (Come to think of it, in many places we probably should.)

Yesterday an area not too far from us had a warning put out to close windows after an airborne chemical leak from a factory that produces silicone. Within the afternoon it was said they were fine to go outside, when huge amounts had poured out into the area. I’m not saying there were definitely injuries following the event - the authorities say there weren’t - but I often wonder how many companies are allowed to get away with irresponsible practices because the human harm isn’t immediately quantifiable.
